BEING A BIRD
by Kay Watkins
I’ve always wanted to be a bird
I’d love flying around
But the more I watch & study them
Even more so now
I’d like to be a bird
Some are quite territorial
Some will bully you, too
And if you’re not careful,
Some will try to eat you
But still I’d like to be a bird
Like a pelican that has its friends
To help each other
fly a long trek
Or just others that hang out together
Scouting out food
For them to eat
Yes, I’d like to be a bird
Like the Sandhill Cranes
Or the mighty eagles
That will mate for life
Nesting & feeding their young
Together…now that would be alright
Yes, I’d like to be a bird
Though it’s not always easy
Usable land & sources of food
Are dwindling left & right
And also some are hunted
Or even raised for food
No, a bird’s life isn’t always easy
But still I’d like to be a bird
As long as I can fly around
Small or big, it matters not
With wings lifting me high off the ground
Yes, I’d like to be a bird.
